Here’s something I don’t get. How is it possible for bands to get so big without not only me but seemingly anyone else I know having heard of them?
Airport Impressions have apparently been around for a while. They’ve got major-label backing courtesy of Sony subsidiary Orchard, and one of the most poorly-penned PR pitches I’ve read in ages, from which I learn that they’re ‘A melodic alternaive (sic) rock band with over ten years of continuous airwave success and vibrant live performance both at local and foreign festivals, with the pinnacle 2016 slot at the Isle of MTV concert reaching a 50K audience,’ and that ‘The band’s sound has been compared to Coldpaly (sic), U2, The Killers and Mumford and Sons’.
Yep. I’m hearing that anthemic stadium rock sound alright. It’s all there in the expensive, expansive production and pseudo-soulful delivery. The manufactured emotion, the just-so dishevelled look…. Alright. There’s a lot to like here. There’s a lot for me to like here, with hints of early Editors and Interpol in the mix. But something smells funny. It’s the smell of money, of contrivance.

Should it matter if the music’s ok? Well, when the music’s only OK, and the music is based on sincerity and emotional engagement, yes. Authenticity matters, and you can’t buy that at any price.
