They emerged 3 years ago with their self-titled EP, and they’ve been busy establishing a fan base on the live circuit with support slots with the likes of Kikagaku Moyo, Radio Moscow and Monster Magnet ahead of this, their debut album. Anyone who picked the up early will find it was worth the wait.
The title carries emo / post-metal connotations, but this Chicago-based quintet mine a seam of heavily-spun hypnotic psychedelic folk across the 10 tracks on ‘All is Lost’ and while the band cite the all-too-obvious riffenctric rock influences like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc., it’s the mentions of Pink Floyd, Back Angels, The Velvet Underground and The Doors that seem to more keenly encapsulate the droney riffage.

It would be misleading and fundamentally wrong to say that Marissa Allen’s vocals make the album, but her powerful performances to very much define the band’s sound. That’s by no means to diminish the solidity of the other members’ input, and without their efforts, which yield crushing guitars powered by a monumental rhythm section, all would indeed be lost before it was even remotely found, the dynamic is such that her presence elevates Dead Feathers from being just another doomy psychedelic band to something special.
