Review: 'Muller, Geiger von'
'Venezia'

-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '5th June 2020'

Our Rating:
I can never tell if a shortage of biographical detail is intended to be enigmatic or simply the result of not knowing what to write. Too little is almost as unhelpful as too much. I get barely enough from London-based Geiger von Muller about his new single release, Venezia, which I’m told presents ‘a gloomy view of Marco Polo’s city, Italian home of the plague doctor mask’, which is a ‘new collaboration single + video… with electro/noise/experimental artists Xqui and Pelso’

Not that biographical context should define appreciation of artistic endeavour, and ‘Venezia’ emerges from a woozy slow-droning misty swell. Notes echo abstract in a heat-haze desert of space. A spoken vocal, pitch-shifted down to register around the gut renders the words unintelligible, but their mutterings convey a dislocated import.

Paired with the dreamy, fractured visuals, it captures the unique spirit of a city, rich in heritage and radiating an historical opulence that’s under constant threat of being overwhelmed by tourists or water, an ancient settlement that is in some ways a barometer of global warming. Unease and uncertainty permeate the atmosphere of this project. Artistically, it’s a success, but it’s pretty barren as a listening experience.
