Our Rating:
This Brooklyn-born artist's debut solo album is actually a collaboration which combines his talents with those of Norwegian brothers Ole Johannes and Jorn Åleskjær.

The cross-cultural exchange took place over a period of eight years beginning with basic tracks written by Olson and the Åleskjærs in Norway. These were taken back to Brooklyn where vocals, horns and strings were added at Olson's studio. Producer Ole Johannes finished off the tracks.

Olson may have stepped away from The Ladybug Transistor, the band he co-founded in 1996, but he doesn't depart at all from that group's gently melodic style.

His smooth, relaxed vocals and trumpet are at the heart of the sound. These are augmented by lush string arrangements scored by Joe McGinty who also plays piano and organ. Other contributions come from Håvard Krogedal - bass, cello; Emil Nikolaisen - drums and Suzanne Nienaber on backing vocals.

Having spent so long on the project, you would expect something more substantial than eleven brief songs spanning a modest 37 minutes. I'm sure they would argue that quality matters more than quantity but you can't help feeling that these pleasant but slight songs could have been fleshed out far more.
