Review: 'Spizzenergi'
'Valentine’s Day'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '15th January 2021'

Our Rating:
They may be best known for the quirky novelty single ‘Where’s Captain Kirk?’ in early 1980, but Spizzenergi – who, during their brief career that spanned 1978-1982, plus a couple of revivals, the second of which remains ongoing – recorded under a multitude of ‘spizz’ themed monikers actually had something of a knack for slightly oddball nerdy (post)punk.

Following an unexpected Christmas hit in December (‘Christmas In Denmark Street’ entered the OCC official UK Vinyl Singles Chart at No 13), they’re kicking off 2021 with the release of a cover of Bowie’s Valentine’s Day, mixed by none other than Tony Visconti, to commemorate the legendary artist’s death five years ago. How was it five years ago?

‘Valentine’s Day’ proved to be Bowie’s last 7” single release, lifted from ‘The Next Day’ – the last album released in his lifetime – in 2013, and featured Visconti on bass.

Spizzenergi’s take on the tune is a pretty faithful rendition of the buoyant glam thumper, and for all of the band’s historical irreverence, this has all the hallmarks of a remarkably sincere tribute. The sound is quite beefed up, and if anything reminds us of just how much Suede were more or less a Bowie tribute, both in the guitar playing and the vocal inflections. But more than anything, it reminds us of what a unique and distinctive artist Bowie was, and of the sheer scale of his influence. It’s hard to go wrong with a cover like this.
