It’s been a good run, but out of the blue Åsa Söderqvist recently announced that she’s putting ShitKid to bed after five insanely prolific years. She’s signing off with a career-spanning double album, ‘Sort Stjerne!’ which collects close to an hour’s worth unreleased tracks written throughout ShitKid’s career.
Although her stylistic range has been broad, ‘runt på stranden’ feels pretty much representative: a scuzzed-out lo-fi indie punk rocker, it’s fast and fizzy, the drum machine buried in the crackling guitar, the vocals swamped in reverb. It feels very much like a one-take effort, and it works – the loose, slacker ShitKid vibe simply doesn’t lend itself to polished performance and production. It’s all over in a fraction over 2 minutes, and feels in so many respects to be emblematic of a brief but singular career.
