Review: 'Death Goals'
'Shrike / Exit Wounds Live Session'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '4th June 2021'

Our Rating:
Death Goals, a ‘chaotic hardcore duo from Hertfordshire, UK’, have been kicking out self-produced digital releases since 2017, and having finally birthed their full-length debut, ‘The Horrible and the Miserable’ in June, they’ve timed it perfectly for the spell where gigs still aren’t really happening and things remain uncertain, and most venues are booked solid for the next six months.

But with a trio of (rescheduled) shows booked for late July / early August, Death Goals have performed a live set and unveiled a brace of tracks from that session to showcase their live sound and boost awareness of the album ahead of those.

Performing the album in full, it’s the mid-album blasters ‘Shrike’ and ‘Exit Wounds’ that they’ve selected to showcase their sound, and on the evidence of the footage, it seems like a reasonable choice.

The two tracks together have a total running time of under five minutes, and the sound… I expect a fair few will consider the sound absolutely shit. It’s totally maxed out, at times fuzzing into mic distortion and just completely overloading. The drums sound like muddy, murky thwacks and the vocals, particularly on ‘Exit Wounds’ where drummer George Milner takes on the lead duties for the verses while Harry Bailey churns out squalling noise blasts that don’t really sound like a guitar so much as electronic currents being coursed through sheet metal.

It's not pretty, but it’s a wonderful racket.
