Review: 'KID MILLIONS & JAN ST WERNER'
'Imperium Droop'

-  Label: 'Thrill Jockey Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '25th June 2021'

Our Rating:
This album is a musical dialogue between the two experimental musicians that began in 2016.

Jan St.Werner is one half of the noted electronica duo Mouse On Mars. Kid Millions (John Colpitts) from NYC is known for his work with his own Oneida, as well as working with bands like Royal Trux and Spiritualized. He has a solo project called Man Forever and has collaborated with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Boredoms, and So Percussion.

The eight tracks on the duo’s debut collaboration consists of 41 minutes of edited and arranged elements deriving from improvised live recordings.

Werner’s contributions are referred to as prismatic deluges which sit beside Millions’ ”tireless rhythms.”

Guest musicians are Swedish free jazz saxophone player Mats Gustafsson on two tracks (Color Bagpipes and Nuclei Melodies), bassist Richard Hoffman on Dark Tetrad    and bass clarinetist Andrew Barker onAstral Stare.

Be prepared for liberal doses of distortion, disruption and disorientation.

The objective is not to create funky beats or catchy tunes but to build dark, dense atmospheres based on random and often jarring textures.

It holds the attention by virtue of being uneasy on the ear.
