'Daughter'

Our Rating:
According to the PR blurb, Grace Morrison is so much more than a country singer. She is pop, folk and roots too, all rolled into a tidy, and fairly conventional package.

‘Daughter’ is her third album and started out with the idea of it being a rawer, Lori McKenna style EP. However, producer Jon Evans proposed a less stripped-down affair and recruited Lloyd Maines on pedal steel guitar to flesh out the sound at a recording studio in Austin, Texas. The 12 songs are mildly confessional and mainly aimed at a mainstream pop-orientated audience.

It’s plain that Morrison is not entirely at ease with her butter-wouldn’t-melt image but she’s a long way from being a good girl gone bad. “Sometimes I go drinking, I never go too far”, she sings in Small Town Lament, a song in which expresses a mild frustration towards the parochial life of a cosy coastal town where everyone knows your business. It’s notable, however, that she doesn’t actually get around to saying where she’d like to move to.

Morrison describes the track Alice as “the closest thing to an accurate picture of my life in song” as she looks back to high school proms and her first love.

Her affinity towards 90s pop, is embraced in Things You Already Know, where she openly emulates Boyz II Men balladry.

The Edge Of I Am is a note to self that there’s no need to fear being bolder and that it’s fine to embrace the spotlight more. Although she says that the album as a whole is “about stepping into your power”, any rebellious spirit is tempered by a recognition that playing by the rules makes for a less troubled existence.
