Review: 'Voodoo Radio'
'Turn Out the Light'

-  Label: 'Holy Dotage'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '19th November 2021'

Our Rating:
Voodoo Radio are Cumbrian daughter and dad combo – (singer/drummer Paige and guitarist Tony). They’re pitched as ‘a magical mix of Transvision Vamp, sneak in some Stray Cats, and finally some Eddie Van Halen guitar sounds and you’re getting into the heart of the band’, with their new single being ‘a fiersome, unapologetic ode to the curtailment of a one night stand. Paige delivers a wild and direct vocal that is as shameless as it is damning.’

It’s a leader for their debut mini album ‘Pop Pills’, ser for release on 3rd December.

It seems like a slightly uncomfortable choice of subject matter for a father / daughter duo to be covering.

As a short, full-throttle punk rock tune, ‘Turn Out the Light’ is strong. It blasts off with a raw and energetic guitar boogie that’s driven at 100 miles per hour by breakneck drumming and a really gutsy, forceful vocal. There’s no letup in pace or power, it’s bursting with hooks, and balances hedonism with feminism, and it’s clear who’s in control of the situation here. ‘Get in get out, get on get off… we slip we slide, we bark we ride, ejaculate, you give you take, goodbye’, Paige blasts in full-on rock mode. It’s powerful, empowering, exhilarating… and then you think ‘but that’s your dad’.

Intergenerational awkwardness aside, though, it’s a cracking single, and no mistake.
