'Eye for an Eye'

-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '1st October 2021'

Pitched as ‘almost a concept album that tells a story’ ‘Eye for an Eye’ is a set of songs centred around the theme of murderous retribution. It’s metal aright, drawing influence from Metallica, Pantera, Trivium or Slipknot: as such, its an amalgam of old-school thrash and nu-metal, with slab-like riff chuggery slamming hard against some extravagant solo fretwork.

The concept may hardly be ground-breaking, but their approach suggest that they have a real interest in exploring the territory and venturing beyond cliché. They often succeed, too, delivering an assured debut that balances the different elements with a confidence that shines through.

There are some nice, easy-on-the-ear passages: the verses of the title track are melodic, with clean, tuneful vocals drifting out over a soft, picked guitar before the switch to roaring guttural anguish and chunky minor chords descending into the pits of despair and a mid-section that goes into hundred-mile-an-hour hyperdrive.

These guys can definitely play, and while sometimes music this technical loses sight of the point that music should be at least in some way listenable as well as showcasing the skills of the band, ‘Eye for an Eye’ sees the German quartet keep their collective eye on the task of delivering a hard-slamming album of thematically-linked songs. They bring the rage and the roar, as well as the full-on heavy to a strong debut that has a lot going for it.
