In the Nursery formed way back in 1981, inspired by seeing Joy division, and were underground pioneers of electronics and the nascent industrial scene. Since their 1983 mini-album, When Cherished Dreams Come True, they’ve maintained a steady output and over the last 30-odd years have amassed a quite remarkable catalogue of work, with no major gaps in their 40-year career, kicking out new material with an almost clockwork regularity.
‘Ektachrome (The Animator)’ is the taster single release for the next album, ‘Humberstone’, and it’s a slow, steady tune that’s straddles post-rock and country. Synths that sound like strings brood and flutter, but ultimately go nowhere, and perhaps this is the real theme. It may not sound especially animated, but it does sound good.

It’s one of those instrumentals that evokes atmosphere by absence, and they’re clearly not afraid of going stark, and it all comes together to make for a solid single and a solid foundation for the album.
