Review: 'Melbies, The'
'Songs For Harambe (Vol.1)'

-  Label: 'Bad Granola Records/Bandcamp'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '27.5.22.'

Our Rating:
This is the debut album by The Melbies a new young Anthemic pop Punk band with a cartoon edge from Dover who are singed to Bad Granola records. Songs For Harambe (Vol 1) was recorded partly before lockdown and completed during lockdown. They are a trio of James Nesbitt, Sam McNamara and Daniel Drew, the album was produced by Charlie Creese.

The album opens with For Harambe (Rest In Peace) it's a great pop punk blast off point, that tells the heart-breaking story of how Harambe ended up getting killed in captivity for behaving exactly how he would naturally, although I'm not sure everyone will be singing along to a chorus line of "Get your Fucking Dicks Out For Harambe." This has the anthemic qualities of Gimp Fist and similar modern punk bands.

Sausage Fest: The Musical! Keeps up the frantic pace up with a powerpop punk choon that asks do we really need to go see Sausage Fest: The Musical as the drums pummel at your brains and the guitar fries.

I'm Sorry Indy takes aim at The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull and everything that's wrong with that film, that's still the only Indiana Jones film I haven't seen, as I couldn't make myself see the turkey, this is perfect to swing across large venues on ropes too.

Reboot Me looks for the restart button, as you've come a cropper in a massive mosh pit and need a jolt to get you back in that pit, as you try to avoid being stuck on the treadmill of the work grind, endlessly repeating on you like a bad kebab.

Brother goes beyond the usual, it just blasts at us as if they have to play as fast as they can or big Brother will take their guitars away.

There's A Reason is slow and acoustic and asks all sorts of questions about someone who went out on a bender and things didn't go to plan, as he doesn't turn up at 3 am like arranged, this sounds a bit like Tenacious D as it all finally goes off.

Snakebite is a super short hardcore blast of support for being totally trashed on Snakebite in the middle of the day.

Beano has an adult updated theme to how they see the lives of the main characters in the Beano's lives panning out. Set to a sort of Ska Hardcore punk grinder sound, as they tell us how much they dislike The Beano. It also has some Suicidal Tendencies influences on show.

Georgia is a song of shock and horror for the face of a friend and the work they've had to make them look plastic instead of real, The Melbies are anti-plastic surgery and botox punk band she has been totally Botched.

Everything You Said is at the poppier end of the songs on this album in a sort of Green Day kind of way as they give someone the kiss off, as they don't want to be your friend, as if they would hang around with a loser like you anyway.

Rosie And Jim is about the TV show, but as I've never seen it, I'm far too old, I'm not sure how bang on they are with there take on the show, either way they just want more songs that sound a bit like The Descendants.

King Of My Castle sounds like they want a Black Flag on top of there castle as they tell us all the things they don't need as they've decided they won't be part of the daily grind.

The album closes with The Ballad Of Colin Dent about a drunken escapade or three, as they have to keep apologizing for Denty, what he gets up to, over one last blast of pop punk magic and a bass solo.
