Review: 'CALLAN, PAUL'
'Dog (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '31st May 2022'

Our Rating:
Paul Callan’s Bandcamp page reveals that he is from County Louth, Ireland but little more. The artist photo is of him in a Nightmare Before Christmas style ghost mask.

His Twitter profile is equally uninformative, stating only “Making music” in his bio and using a photo of a dog as his avatar.

The EP follows on from a flurry of activity in 2021, during which he released online one song per month. With an additional three new songs, these made up his debut full length album called ‘FUNZI’.

It’s safe to assume Callan values his anonymity and wants his songs to speak for themselves.

So what do the three tunes on this new EP appear to be saying?

From my own hearing, I’d say the take away is that all we can be sure of in this world is that nothing is ever certain or stable.

Triangular Forest has lyrics about wrestling with ghosts and finding that dreams are not what they seem.

The Last Night has the desolate quality of love slowly tearing him apart “I thought this would be forever.”

The bird song intro to At Home With Me initially seems more hopeful but appears to be a plea to someone who has left and should return: “I could cry about you but I won’t”

Despite the profound sadness underlying the songs, the melodies are rich and the switch between acoustic and electric guitar gives the tunes a distinctive atmosphere to add to the air of mystery.
