Our Rating:
The latest collection by this cheery Canadian roots trio aim to provide an uplift in these dark and confusing times.

The band’s fiercely optimistic instincts have been sorely tested of late by the Covid induced hiatus and by the fact that band members Adrian Gross and Darryl Poulsen have both lost close family members. However, any lingering feelings of doubt or despondency are effectively glossed over by a bouncy set of twelve tunes that never stray from the sunny side of the street.

Poulsen’s song You Said Goodbye has lyrics of personal loss but as these are set to a toe-tapping rhythm there’s no question of dwelling on the heartbreak.

Adrian Gross’ The River Roaming Song, was written after his father’s passing but once again the mood is stubbornly upbeat; Gross says: “ I was wrestling with the change that’s always constant: the flowing of the river, the seasons turning, people passing.” Finding an affirmative perspective on grief is indicative of the band’s positive thinking.

Bluegrass is still at the heart of their sound but the inclusion of a cover version of Tom Petty’s jaunty rocker A Mind With A Heart of Its Own shows that they are happy to acknowledge the influence of other genres.

The other tunes and instrumentals are original compositions with an emphasis on high energy tracks where joy and camaraderie trumps sadness and isolation.
