Review: 'BISHOP,JOHN DEREK & INGE WEATHERHEAD BREISTEIN'
'RO'

-  Label: 'Jazzland Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '21st October 2022'

Our Rating:
In 2020, Inge Weatherhead Breistein (tenor saxophone) and John Derek Bishop, alias Tortusa, (live sampling) performed a series of five concerts in five separate churches in Norway. This album consists of edited versions of these performances.

Each track is identified by monosyllabic Norwegian words with the title tune, at seven minutes, being the longest. The other nine pieces clock in at between 3:30 and 4:30. Keeping things relatively brief helps to create a varied, free-flowing ambience.

This is very much a collaborative work with the pair taking cues from one another. Sax is ever present not always dominant. In Trekk, for example, Bishop's real time samples evoke early morning birdsong with swirling textures and precise percussive counterpoints.

They never rely on breaks and beats, subtly creating instead an organic mood with admirable restraint.

The sound is well described by Thomas Bey William Bailey in the PR as “a fascinating study in the process of finding abundance within austerity” and the inspired use of space and silence has echoes of the great Jan Garbarek.

A fine, transporting album.
