The second single release of 2025 from Cardiacs, 'Downup' is a song about love but it’s not a love song. Nor does it subvert the idea: with a classic pop structure, the chorus races in before settling down to a catchy verse. Tim Smith’s eclectic sensibilities were always worn proudly on his sleeve and LSD is a place where every aspect of him meets, as a man and a composer. Downup exemplifies this with its pop flavours intensified by the naiveté of the lyrics…
‘Love’s like a bug,
Lived careless but honestly
Life fearless would it hit..’
Mike Vennart (Biffy Clyro, Empire State Bastard, Oceansize) provides a vocal that is delightfully tender in the verses. Singing over brass arrangements by Craig Fortnam (NSRO), the two elements combine to unite the song’s innocence with experience and create a link to the sound of Cardiacs albums past. Kavus Torabi (The Utopia Strong, Gong) weaves guitar lines in and out, perfectly placed, fresh as the breeze, binding up all the threads in order to present an intact reading of an elusive concept.
