Multi-talented multimedia magician Rick Senley could be said to have something of a schizophrenic personality, at least where his musical output is concerned. Recording as I Am A Man With a St Tropez Tan and Music For Voyeurs, he explores two very different trajectories. Both projects utilise samples and electronic sound sources, but beyond that it’s often hard to believe they spring from the same man’s mind.
The latest album as I Am A Man, ‘Just a Ghost’ is harsh, dark, disorientating. In contrast, ‘The Long Sleep’ is a work of magnificent tranquillity. Long, slow synth sounds, rolling pianos, birdsong: these are the sounds that feature here. While often evoking melancholy, the 12 soft and reflective tracks here drift into one another, effecting a fugue-like state.
