Review: 'FLAMING JUNE'
'Rumpelstiltskin...EP'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: 'May 2013'

Our Rating:
When you think of folk music, often the first thing to pop into your head is the distictive sounds that are involved. Certain instruments (fiddle, harmonica, banjo) and chord patterns that make the genre instantly recognisable.

But often, folk music isn't just a collection of familiar tropes, but a genre with something to say - writers who tell tall tales or make political points - and Flaming June are no exception.

There's no doubting that this displays a lot of the surface folk sheen as mentioned above, and folk fans will find plenty to enjoy here simply based on the music. But listen to the lyrics and you'll discover there's a lot more to this.

Songwriter Louise Hamilton uses her music to raise awareness of an issue that's very close to her heart - domestic abuse - not in a dour, preachy fashion, but in a positive way. By demonstrating that those suffering abuse can both survive and flourish, Hamilton and Flaming June have delivered an EP both enjoyable and powerful.

NB: Full EP title is 'Rumpelstiltskin & The Perils And Promises of Womanhood'
