Review: 'PHOBICS, THE/ FIRE EXIT'
'London, 12 Bar Club, 25th May 2013'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave'

Our Rating:
Coming at the end of a very busy week of gigs this was as much an excuse to go out and have a drink as it was to hear the bands and I never took any notes at this one. Consequently, I'm sorry if it's a short review.

FIRE EXIT are apparently celebrating 35 years together and yet somehow we've never heard of them!! They are Scottish punk also rans and it was soon easy to understand how they had stayed firmly off of my radar as even after all these years they still sound like they can barely play a lot of the time.

The songs are a mix of stuff about getting drunk and social issue songs about how religion starts wars and how they want to drink all weekend long. The singer, a certain Mr Gerry Atric, was a decent shout along front man who kept claiming they were about to finish and then carried on. They did make us laugh quite a bit although not always with them sometimes at them. We got to the stage of deciding it would be more fun to hang out in the alley than hear much more of Fire Exit so we headed out of the Fire Exit just as they were ushering up their special guests who we missed. Sorry again.

THE PHOBICS, meanwhile, haven't been around quite as long as Fire Exit and are a whole lot tighter and more capable as a live band. As ever they give us some good no nonsense snotty punk with whip smart lyrics and some good spunky guitar playing.

They still have that wasted rage against our useless politicians and are a perfect accompaniment to a few bottles of Cider on a Saturday night. They didn't hang around either, playing only 6 or 7 songs so not giving us any chance of getting bored.

We missed any other bands on this bill put together by London Calling and once again sorry it's a short and sweet one. But then The Phobics were the 10th band I'd seen this week. Urgh!
