Review: 'Where The Skeletons Play'
'Serotonin Blueprints'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '27th May 2013'

Our Rating:
Expanding on the territory laid out by their 2012 debut EP ‘Generation Wars’, ‘Serotonin Blueprints’ sees the enigmatic duo Where the Skeletons Play defining and refining their sound and showing they really are striving to carve their own niche.

‘Perspex Queen’ certainly makes for an impressive opener. A chunky guitar and robust rhythm are only part of the equation, straddling epic post-grunge in a fashion reminiscent of The God Machine and monumental post-metal a la Pelican. NIN and Placebo collide on ‘Punctuate the Sky’, while the extended instrumental passages on ‘If we just pretend…’ see the band strolling confidently in progressive territory.

What makes WTSP stand out is that they’ve got plenty of meat, with a powerful, solid sound, but that they match it with nuance, texture and emotion. I’m not talking emo, but I’m not talking about blind, inarticulate rage either: it’s intelligent stuff, and while serious and expansive, manages to avoid the overblown pretentious theatrics of Muse.
