Review: 'FYFE, AARON'
'Closer to You (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: 'May 2013'

Our Rating:
I think this EP is fantastic. Just to be sure we're clear on that, this is a fantastic EP and if you cannot hear the pure talent it possesses I urge you to question your opinions.

Songs written about life experiences and love, the songs are intensely personal-almost confessional. 'Closer to You' is the first track and draws you in immediately, it's mysterious bass line and Fyfe's string work and vocals make it all-in-all a delightful listen-although not the EP's strongest. You're then led into the second of six tracks; 'Life Less Wonderful' is one of the stronger of the selections. Gentle strumming moving into intricate string work and soothing beats, this is definitely an example of Fyfe's song writing ability.

'Bluebirds' and we're halfway through, charming violins accompanied by yet more intricate string work (a particular strong point for Aaron Fyfe). It's the kind of song you can imagine yourself being in a movie to, perhaps in a speeding car watching the city lights fly past your window against the inky black sky, or walking through a meadow at sunset and staring thoughtfully into the distance.

'Roses' is one of the cheerier sounding songs on the album; it even has a summery vibe. Singing of daydreams and Dolly Parton, Fyfe just makes you want to tap your foot and sing along with this one, yet another song you can imagine playing during the movie of your life. Now, onto the two live tracks. I think putting live tracks on an EP is a risky move, personally.

It's probably the listener's first impression of you and their opinion hangs on a mere six songs, if you're a weaker live performer or even just had bad recording equipment the EP could go from "alright" to "what the hell were they thinking?" in seconds. However, Aaron Fyfe is a different story. His vocals and timing is are both perfect and it's very difficult to tell the difference between the studio tracks and the live ones.

Overall 'Closer to You' is a great EP and I cannot wait to see where Aaron goes next. We're rooting for you Aaron!
