Review: 'Horse Party'
'Scarlet & Blue EP'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
Horse Party’s previous outing was an impressively meaty blues-rock workout that showed bags of promise. It’s a pity, then that they’ve chosen to follow it up with a live EP. Perhaps they had no funds for studio time and wanted to put out something by way of a stopgap, and that’s all fine and well, but, well, they’re not big enough to pull this one off.

The stomping drums that dominate the live cut of the previous single, ‘Back to Mono’ are neat but there’s too much cymbal in the way you tend to get on a lot of rougher live recordings, and it’s a problem that plagues the other two tracks, too. Add to that the sound of thirty people applauding and the fact The Hunter Club isn’t Wembley really hits home.

I don’t want to be too hard on Horse Party: the songs themselves are good, and the performances are taut and robust. As a freebie taste, it’s fine, but really doesn’t do them justice. They probably need to be seen and heard first-hand, and while they’re sorting out the next studio release, you’re probably better off seeing a gig or checking out the single release of ‘Back to Mono’ instead.
