Review: 'REVELERS, THE'
'The Revelers'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '15th April 2013'

Our Rating:
Based in Lafayette, The Revelers (note the American spelling) are a five-man band who bill themselves as a band revisiting '50s swamp pop.

They also throw in generous doses of cajun, country, blues and zydeco for good measure. The restless switches in style is doubtless a reflection of the fact that all five take turns as songwriters.

The group comprise members of two other bands from Lousiana - Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys.

As the band name suggests, they are founded on the principle of creating good time dance music that reflects the Lousiana tradition for hospitality.

You wouldn't necessarily guess this from the uninspiring cover photo of a young woman studying a vinyl album in a sterile home environment.

Accordionist and fiddle player Blake Miller wrote the four tracks sung in French
and probably had a say in choosing the traditional waltz La Valse de Cadien. These, and a traditional instrumental, Wang Wang Blues are the liveliest, and most authentic sounding tunes.

Other songs drift too often into easy listening rockabilly. The title of I'm Glad For Your Sake (But I'm Sorry For Mine) speaks for itself while the sentiments of If You Ain't Got Love echo those of Jerry Reed Hubbard's A Thing Called Love made famous by Johnny Cash.

And if you're looking for a check list for a perfect evening's entertainment, Jukebox Songs spells it out for you, suggesting spending the whole night drinking, dancing and spending money on the jukebox.

Like the record as a whole, this list follows an efficient, though unambitious, formula which at least has the advantage of being fully tried and tested.
