Almost two years to the day on from the release of their second album ‘The Magazines You Read’ Berlin-based indie songsters return with ‘Irrational’. Melding electronic and old-school conventional instrumentation, the 10 tracks are by turns whimsical, melancholy, upbeat and dreamy. Mostly, though, they’re slightly wet electro-based pop of an 80s persuasion.
There’s an easy-going bounce to opener ‘Not That Kind’, and ‘Where is the Line’ is pure vintage 80s disco pop. Elsewhere ‘The Harbour’ has echoes of Nik Kershaw about it while following a vaguely nautical theme as an analogy for a sinking relationship. The lyrics aren’t nearly as bad as the ersatz synth sax break in the middle though.
Credit where it’s due, though: it’s a coherent album, and with the 10 tracks clocking in at 36 minutes, it doesn’t outstay its welcome, and it maintains focus throughout.
