I can dig improv as much as the next man. Great improve can be magical and spellbinding, leaving the listener awed and mystified by the intuition and chemistry between the musicians involved. I can also appreciate Terrie Ex’s renown as a dynamic force in the field of boundary-pushing rock music with The Ex, and that Paal Nilssen-Love is a drummer well respected for his power and energy.
But to listen to the pair tuning up and dicking about for over three quarters of an hour, without even a hint of a tune, riff or rhythm for the duration, well, frankly, it’s not fun. As they lumber and crash from one stuttering atonal cacophony to another, I found my guts lurching involuntarily. Hurgu! Indeed.
