Review: 'Rudimentary Peni'
'Archaic'

-  Album: 'Archaic' -  Label: 'Southern Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave'

Our Rating:
The third Rudimentary Peni release to receive the reissue treatment, the 2004’s ‘Archaic’ 10” is really very different from those that preceded it – namely ‘Pope Adrian’ and ‘Cacophony’ . It’s a more overtly conventional punk release, the 12 tracks – which have a total running time of 16 minutes – are short, sharp buzzsaw guitar blasts built around simple, repetitive three-chord riffs, and finds Nick Blinko sneering and snarling minimalist lyrics – sometimes a single line slogan occupying a song.

But this is Rudimentary Peni, and convention really isn’t part of the plan: the bass and guitar are both dirty and distorted, trebly, messy and abrasive. This pretty much sums up the album as a whole – and that is definitely a good thing.
