Review: 'Cuushe'
'Butterfly Case'

-  Album: 'Butterfly Case'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '23rd September 2013'

Our Rating:
The promo write-up focuses on Cuushe’s use of delicate analog tape, distorted synths, drum machines, looped guitars and her signature feathery vocals. Yes, ‘feathery’. In fairness, it’s not such a silly choice of adjective, and is, in fact, rather fitting in the way it evokes the delicate, soft-edged qualities of Cuushe’s tones. The album’s title, too, is indicative of the airy nature of the music it contains.

Every single one of those clichés, along the well-worn lines of ‘lighter than air’, ‘floating on a cloud’, ‘whistful’, ‘dreamy’, ‘ethereal’, and infinitely recycled sixth-form similes and references to swimming, drifting and floating that you’ve read a hundred thousand times in relation to blissed-out, airy pop is entirely relevant and apply tenfold to Cuushe’s ‘Butterfly Case’. It’s not gripping, thrilling or exhilarating, and instead drifts by and washes over you. It’s not bad by any means, but the cumulative effect of these 10 tracks, with a 50-minute running time is a soft-focus blurring to musical wallpaper.
