Review: 'YOUNG REBEL SET'
'Crocodile'

-  Label: 'Ignition Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '4th October 2013'

Our Rating:
In the film ‘The Krays’, Ronnie and Reggie are asked by their schoolteacher to think of a “wonderful word”. Simultaneously they both say "Crocodile".

The Young Rebel Set like to feel they have the same telepathic connection as the notorious gangster twins. Hence the album title.

It is the follow up to their 2011 debut album ‘Curse Our Love’ and was recorded in Glasgow at Chem19 Studios with producer Paul Savage, former drummer of The Delgados.

The five-piece band from Stockton-on-Tees are led by singer/guitarist Matty Chipchase and comprise two sets of brothers – Andy and Chris Parmley on guitar and bass, plus Mark and Luke Evans on guitar and drums respectively.

The common refrain in the album's track by track commentary is that they wanted to keep the raw qualities of the demo versions, the implication being they prefer not to sound too slick. The blue-collar rasp to Matty Chipchase's voice is wholly in keeping with this ambition.

In terms of inspirations they cite Dylan, The Byrds, The Doors, Beach Boys and Bruce Springsteen but influences closer to home like The Coral or Arctic Monkey seem more pronounced. Their gritty sound has more to do with the bleaker climate of North East England than the sun-kissed beaches of the U.S.

The working class swagger of their lead single The Lash Of The Whip, written by Andy Palmley, exemplifies their earthy style.

They mix things up so that Tuned Transmission has a poppy country jangle, The Girl From The 51offers a folky Times They Are A Changing ode to a certain Josephine while One Law is tentatively anthemic.

All the tracks are undercut with a rough-edged romanticism which is honest enough but their brand of classic rock remains too old fashioned to be truly exciting.
