Our Rating:
Well unlike the recent lead single from this album that I reviewed a few weeks ago, SUNRAY'S album 'Full Circle' is in full-on, glorious stereophonic sound and, as implied by the trippy cover art, it opens with a monster psychedelic drone rock instrumental Here To Go: sounding like the sort of freak outs that ended live sets by Spacemen 3 or Loop, with drones repeating and building over the 11 minutes plus. Wow. It shifts slightly on Revelation, the second instrumental, only this time there is more of a Indian, almost raga-like psychedelic drone rock.

Finally the vocals kick in on the stereo version of the single Take Me There. It seems to fit perfectly as in this context it really sounds like a Viva Saturn outtake and is a nice, tripped out tune and yet again it's the phasing that really gets to me on this tune. Baby Honey is them at their most Loop-like: a bit dirtier and a good, almost whispering in your ear repeating of the song's title towards the end of the song as it starts to fade out, which considering it's a cover of an old single by The Pastels is quite interesting.

Golden Dawn sounds like a real come down tune that you'd stick on in the very early hours while waiting for the sun to rise before you crash out. It brings a good chilled-out vibe that's nice and frazzled and I ought to listen to the stereo version next to the mono one to see how the different mixes effect the vibe which is real laid back on both versions. They then cover Jeffrey Lee Pierce's Zona Rose in a fine tripped-out, laid back way which allows the song to wrap itself around your brain ready to split your mind open and let you drift away with it.

Tears At Sunrise is another come down tune; perfect for chilling to as the drugs start to wear off and everything goes back to normal, before they turn into Mazzy Star before your ears on the album closer Thru the Night. This features Sophie Ray as the female vocalist duetting with Jon Chambers on a great song that sounds like Mazzy Star recreating the sound of the third Velvet Underground album.

I really enjoyed listening to this album and would like to see them perform live at some point. Having said that, in these smoke free days it might be more difficult to get into the right head space for the band's music to work properly.
