Review: 'YAST'

Our Rating:
YAST are Swedish lo-fi romantics. They formed in 2007 as a trio and then expanded to a five piece in 2010. So a five year gestation period, which I suspect is far more likely for a band in Sweden than in Britain and no bad thing. I am curious about the whole lo-fi thing? Call me old fashioned but lo-fi for me is something born from necessity and that, in turn, is the mother of invention: e.g the first Flying Nun bands in NZ only had a four-track and some rubbish mics but with it they created a 'sound'. Authenticity is not something you can strive for, it really isn't.

Obviously, none of the above matters. Is this a good single? Yes it is. It's catchy, sweet and to the point. There is plenty of guitar on it. Some of it jangles, some of it noises and some of it carries the melody. All of it is drenched in effect. The vocals are quirky. It sounds like a woman and the lyrics would best be described as naive. The whole thing is a sugar coated rush.

There is a Marr-esque jangle to the sound but that does both sides a disservice. For my money the song this most reminds me of is Twisterella by Ride and that is no bad thing in my book.                        They are being tipped for the big time by all and sundry so I may as well join in the gang-bang. Yast are a blast from the past and a tip for the future.
