Review: 'Wynn, Mark / Sam Forrest'
'That Bike I Was On About Previously / Syria EP'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2nd December 2013'

Our Rating:
It doesn’t seem like five minutes ago since I was reviewing mark Wynn’s last album release (probably because it wasn’t) and lo, here’s another EP on the back of the five albums he’s already put out in the last 12 months. This effort is a split vinyl release with Sam Forrest of Nine Black Alps, who’s become a frequent collaborator of York’s quickfire mouth merchant Mark Wynn, and hardly slack on the output front himself.

Sam contributes two tracks here, and serves up some big grungy guitars married to a laid-back indie vocal style to create heart-rending music that’s half shoegaze, half slacker alt-rock with ‘Syria’ being a standout wherever you care to place it, and ‘No Survivors’ perfectly recapturing the 90s grunge vibe and boasting a beautiful chorus.

Mark’s four tracks (yes, he packs ‘em in at around a minute and a half apiece) are gloriously ramshackle little anti-narratives about bikes, meerkats and conversations left incomplete and half-remembered. Real life, encapsulated in fragmentary random snippets, those inconsequential moments that form the fabric of the every day, as filtered through Mr Winn’s uniquely oddball brain.

Best of all, it’s on vinyl, which as we all know, is a groove sensation.
