Review: 'Taylor, Maria'
'Something About Knowing'

-  Album: 'Something About Knowing' -  Label: 'Saddle Creek'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '4th November 2013'

Our Rating:
Maria Taylor, who’s enjoyed an illustrious career to date, both as one half of Azure Ray and as a solo artist (she has three previous LPs under her belt), not to mention her collaborations with the likes of Moby, Conor Oberst and Michael Stipe. But, it seems, the thing that’s had the most profound effect on her life, and consequently her latest work, is parenthood.

Thankfully, ‘Something About Knowing’ isn’t some sickly-sweet slushfest, and is instead a thoughtful and balanced collection of songs. Maria’s vocal style is clean and melodic, and while most of ‘Something About Knowing’ is of a folk persuasion, Taylor’s diversions into different stylistic territories demonstrate her versatility.

The pop stylings of ‘Tunnel Vision’ draw in elements of electro and world music to mesmerising effect, while ‘Sum of Our Lives’ is a gently drifting sliver of ethereal shoegazey post-rock. The title track has a mellow soft rockin’ county-tinged feel. Laced with hints of Fleetwood Mac, ‘Something About Knowing’ is tuneful and easy on the ear.
