Review: 'My Favourite Runner Up'
'Crossroads'

-  Album: 'Crossroads'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '17th February 2014'

Our Rating:
So here we have the debut album from Welsh foursome My Favourite Runner Up. Back in 2012, I gave their debut release a critical shrug, a noncommittal 5/10.

At the time, I complained that they were nondescript, bland, remarking that they ‘aren’t gut-achingly bad. In fact, there’s nothing wrong with them at all. But their brand of melodic not-quite-rock, not-quite-indie, sort-of-pop is so utterly forgettable, the songs completely fail to register – to the extent that you’ve forgotten the chorus while before they’re even onto the next verse. A bland pumped-up assimilation of Jimmy Eat World, Lostprophets, new Found Glory et al, they’re the sonic definition of ‘dilution’.’

A year and a half on and they’ve honed their sound and forged a clear identity. What they give us, then, is a set of uptempo, emo-tinged punky power-pop. And it’s as generic as hell. I mean, everything is so bloody obvious. With a million bands like this already in existence, really, what’s the point? The market’s saturated and there really is no need.

Not even my second favourite runner up. In fact, they don't even place.
