Review: 'Beginners'
'Beginners EP'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '24th March 2014'

Our Rating:
So, Beginners were born out of a connection to Foster the People drummer Mark Pontius, who previously played with Malbec alongside Samantha Barbera and Nick Ruth. Samantha and Nick rekindled their connection at a FTP gig and thus a new project was born.

Basically, what Beginners do is electropop. While ‘Ever Love’ and ‘Let Go Or Get Dragged’ have an edge and do justify cited reference points like Depeche Mode’s ‘Violator’, ‘Who Knows’ is very, very ordinary and the smoochfest that is ‘So Close I Almost Believed It’ is better forgotten. It’s no that electropop ballads don’t work, but... well, few do. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, but it’s an inauspicious beginning – yes, yes, ok – and lacks any real bite or excitement.
