Our Rating:
This is an altogether different kind of collaboration. ‘Plateforme #1’ sees Laurent Perrier bringing together three notable names from the world of instrumental avant garde. Only, it’s not really a collaboration in the conventional sense: he had the three composers provide him with some source material, which he’s sculpted and mangled to create pieces that resemble – if only in passing – the works of their progenitors. Each track is therefore named after the individual whose material forms the basis of the piece.

‘Felix Kubin’ is a disorientating cut-up collage of sounds, warping tapes criss-crossing over one another, sounds mashed and muffles, cut-ins, drop-outs, fragments and flickers of sound, sped up, slowed down, stretched and broken. Taking William Burroughs’ tape experiments to their unlistenable extreme, it’s nevertheless a fascinating and brain-bending work.

‘Lawrence English’ is centred around broad, ominous drones that waver and rumble, their edges crumbling and dissolving, pushing like slow rivers of larva down deep valleys. Grinding, eroding, slowly abrading…

Insect flickers and tentative waves skitter fleetingly over an almost subliminal hum on ‘Gialuca Becuzzi’. Tinkling chimes trickle down like dew on long leaves of grass… but there’s something alien in the control room, fumbling to block the signals.

A suitably diverse set inspired by three artists who have track records for producing consistently interesting, not to mention challenging music from the fringes, ‘Plateforme #1’ is conceptually innovative – a one-way collaboration is definitely not a remix, but a sound project – and makes for an intriguing listening experience.
