'Hey Kid'

-  Label: 'Vital Music'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th January 2014'

Our Rating:
First look at the artwork on this cd reminds me of The Jam's Sound Affects album, but ANGELA PERLEY is no new mod re-tread but much more of a ballsy woman on a mission to grab our attention and Hey Kid certainly does that.

From the quiet opening of Athens which explodes into life like a cross between Stephanie Finch's Company Men album and early Madder Rose I loved just About everything on here. Athens is slightly bruised but full of hope and just begs to be played over and over again.

Hurricane has some dirty guitars behind Angela's vocals telling us that you're like a hurricane; it's ballsy and full on and damn it makes me want to be Angela's hurricane as her voice wraps around our ears.

George Stone asks George what he's running from. I have no idea but damn it make me want to know what he did to deserve a song this good to be written about him.

Ghost has the feel of prime rocking out Neil Young but with rich female vocals full of longing for the ghosts she keeps running after; a beautiful and bewitching song that you want to hear in the middle of the night.

Angela can Howl at the moon in my ear any time she wants as the slide guitar adds a slightly countrified feel to the song while she sings of her regrets at not being able to help herself because of how good you looked when the sun went down. Oh she can howl at that moon anytime she likes.

Rock and Roller is, ironically, the least rockin' tune on the album. Instead, it's a slow sumptuous ballad. I'm not sure if she regrets the fact that he's got her where he wants her, but damn he's one lucky rock and roller.

Milk In The Fridge basically re-works and retools 1910 Fruitgum Company's Yummy Yummy Yummy I've got love in my tummy, save it loses the saccharine lyrics and makes for something far classier than that 60's bubblegum classic, with added sass and kicking guitars.

Bad Reputation isn't a Joan Jett cover but is just as ballsy. It's about a woman who has a bad reputation for shooting men and well, makes this man want to meet her. A great blasting tune.

Roll On Over re-tools Go Johnny Go and sounds custom made to fill floors and get crowds going a great tune with some kicking organ.

Down And Drunk is quiet and introspective like the morning after the binge has ended and you don't quite know what happened to the weekend and you just want some quiet but the buzzing in your head won't go away.

The album closes with a reprise of the opener and leaves us with some fine guitars and wanting to hear more from Angela Perley & The Howlin' Moons.
