Our Rating:
So there they all are, standing in some woods, dressed like some Frontiersmen and woman with hats and braces and hobnail boots, bearing an array of typical folk instruments; guitar, violin, double bass, shotgun. What? Is this in case the crowd gets too rowdy? Or in case they get hungry and a deer passes while they’re midway through a hoedown? And what about the guy at the back? He’s not wearing any pants (trousers, to us over here in the UK) and doesn’t seem to have an instrument – other than the one stowed down the front of his long johns. I’m certainly not gonna fuck with this crew, not the fire ‘n’ brimstone preacher man at the front with a stern expression on his craggy, grey-bearded face, or the buxom woman beside him as I fear she may eat me for breakfast.

In fairness, and I’m not saying this to save my hide or keep my head from the wall of a ranch house, ‘Different Lonesome’ steers clear of hicksville and sees the Scottish collective deliver a nice, solidly crafted album that covers a range of moods and tempos, chock full of tidy vignettes and sweet melodies. Just look at the workmanship and check the finish!
