Given the band’s background and history, Desert Mountain Tribe sound exactly as you’d expect. And it’s good. ‘Take a Ride’ starts out like early Black Angels (the parallels between it and ‘The First Vietnamese War’ are hard to ignore, but let’s be clear that this is not a criticism) before exploding in a scree of molten guitars more akin to the kind of din you’d find on a record by A Place to Bury Strangers.
The psychedelic blues drone of ‘Coming Down’ also builds to a six-string maelstrom, bleeding into a haze of overdrive and reverb on the swaggering ‘Rolling’ which comes with a dash of the 90s Manchester indie sound, albeit buried beneath a deluge of guitars cranked up to 11. ‘Riders to the Sea’ drifts out on a tide of fuzz and marks the close of an assured debut. Very promising indeed.
