Any album that hits at six hundred miles an hour with a speaker shredding frenzy of barked vocals and guitar devastation all compressed into the most brutal 46 seconds is setting its stall out as an uncompromising sonic assault. And so it is with ‘Current’, the opener on ‘Committed to the Ground’. ‘Incendiary’ immediately follows and is 42 seconds of violent hell. ‘Canon Cast’ slows the pace – well, it’s all relative – but still melts the face, and the title brings a bulldozing bass trudge that’s absolutely deadly.
As titles like ‘The Holy are Broken’ and ‘Pulpit Plague’ suggest, Torch Runner have an axe to grind about religion, and grind they do. It’s an unholy racket alright. The production’s murky, as is only fitting to such a mangled mess of fury, making ‘Committed to the Ground’ as crusty as it comes.
