Choppy punky indie unexpectedly leaps with both feet into a boisterous ska break; jangling guitars slice against one another at unusual angles, nagging and niggling tenaciously, all the while underpinned by tight drums and wonderful bass lines that stroll and twist, building some keen grooves. This is some hearty, craggy rock as befits a Dublin power trio with a difference (notably upright bass) born out of the ashes of various respected Irish bands.
‘Angels & Devils’ builds up a hypnotic and menacing atmosphere that bursts with light in the chorus. ‘There Was a Boy’, too, highlights the band’s knack for contrast, jaunty brass breaking against a ragged holler and tense, tugging bass. Lyrically, they touch on memory and the opposing forces of angels and devils. ‘Peace at Last’ is a towering inferno ripped with torment, and ‘Home’ rounds of an album that’s almost certain to see Glimmermen shine brightly in the indie rock wilderness. By which, of course, I mean it’s a cracking album that has a burning rock ‘n’ roll heart.
