Review: 'Dirty Lies, The'
'Release (EP)'

-  Label: 'Electric Company Music'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '18th May 2014'

Our Rating:
There’s a hazy, vintage quality to the six songs on ‘Release’ that’s oddly compelling, and it’s fitting that this should be released on cassette (and download). The singer sings softly, quietly, slightly droningly in confessional tones and with a keen Scots brogue while the guitar lines nag away over crisp drums. The songs are interrupted and interspersed with rolling blasts of electronic interference, fading in and out. The atmosphere is tense and at times claustrophobic despite the soft-focus guitar sound, drawing on elements of Joy Division and The Twilight Sad.

‘Seraphim’ is bleak and haunting, and the title track carries a post-punk crunch, and throughout the EP, The Dirty Lies paint scenes in grainy, arty black and white, imbued with taut emotion.
