Our Rating:
Oh my God, Red Snapper are back although if truth be known they probably never went away. Musicians this good never do. It’s true what they say, “old musicians don’t die, they just walk around bumping into walls”.

Anyway for those of you not in the know Red Snapper were a relatively successful band throughout the 90s, operating across all tents of the dance field. They were most often associated with ‘trip-hop’and were renowned for bringing a live element to everything they did. Most of the other bands they were grouped with or compared to were not doing this to such an extent. In truth they were probably more akin to an Acid Jazz band like Galliano. The band features Ali Friend (double bass), Richard Thair (drums), and David Ayers (guitar) and let me tell you these boys have chops on their chops.

So, what we have here is a taster for their forthcoming album ‘Hyena’ out at the beginning of September. An album track, a remix of that and two remixes of another track. Card Trick sounds a lot like I remember them. It’s a smoky, funky track and whilst there were some who criticised the Snapper for being a bit too head nod, equally one could argue that this is subtle music that is designed to repay with repeated listens. I fall into the later camp and so does this track.

Tici Taci is a producer whose tracks get hammered by Andrew Wetherall which is not a bad endorsement when all is said and done. He has done a nice elongated remix of Card Trick. The blurb calls it ‘snake house’ and that kinda fits you know? It congas round the room like an anaconda.

The Auntie Flo remix of Village Tap gets straight to work with an afro groove and is suitably bumping and jumping and it’s possibly all going on in the animal pen. Finally Richard Thair re rubs his own live drum take and I love it. All drummer jokes are off the menu for the time being. In conclusion I can’t wait to hear the album come September.
