Review: 'Yip Deceiver'
'Medallius'

-  Album: 'Medallius' -  Label: 'New West Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '7th July 2014'

Our Rating:
I can’t say I was too taken with lead single ‘Presets’, which opens the album. Its slick 80s electro-funk is way too Cool and the Gang to be genuinely cool and smacks of the worst kind of hipsterism. It’s the kind of straight-faced shtick that makes you think that ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ postmodern ironic posturing wasn’t so bad after all.

‘Lover’ is a smooth mid-tempo pop tune with a solid disco beat, but despite the invitation of the chorus ‘you could be my lover... if you wanted’ it’s hard to imagine anyone who would be wooed by a song that sounds like shoulder pads and neon socks.

But for all of this, and everything that’s loathsome about ‘Medallius’ it is well produced, with an undeniable attention to sonic detail and maintaining that retro vibe, not to mention that it’s bursting with grooves and brimming with hooks. It doesn’t really matter whether I actually like it or not: it’s going to get locked into my brain for weeks, and what’s more, people are going to go nuts for it. Resistance is truly futile.
