Review: 'Astronauts'
'Skydive'

-  Label: 'Lo Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2nd June 2014'

Our Rating:
Dan Carney does have a distinctive voice, and listening to ‘Skydive’ you also appreciate just how distinctive a songwriter he is too – by which I mean it does sound very like Dark Captain. Given that the London collective have splintered in myriad directions following their well-received second album ‘Dead legs and Alibis’ (2011), there’s very much a Dark Captain shaped hole in the musical cartography, so the emergence of Astronauts is most welcome.

Debut single ‘Skydive’ is simultaneously dark and dreamy, stripped back and lusciously melodic, acoustic and electronic.

The RocketNumberNine mix is a spacious, tripped-out version, while the Bit Cloudy mix is a squelchy surging dub that drifts and floats several leagues away from the original.

Picking up where Carney’s previous work left off, the signs are extremely promising for the upcoming album, and could see Carney receive well-deserved commercial success as well as critical acclaim.
