No-one could accuse Ray Fontana of being in it for the money. Giving his music away as free MP3, his primary objective is to be heard. On the strength of ‘The Other Side’, he deserves for his music to be heard, too. Surf and synth pop collide over a trip hop influenced beat with a dash of theatrical 60s kitsch to create something that’s fresh-sounding. But what’s key here isn’t the hybridity that makes ‘The Other Side’ a great single, but Fontana’s knack for a hook, with the result emerging along the lines of Steve Miller’s ‘Abracadabra’.
