One thing that’s often struck me in the past about nomeansno is just how generic they sound. I mean, the energy and pace of their straight-ahead punk rock racket is hard to fault, but more often than not there isn’t really all that much to distinguish them from countless other bands. Granted, some may be imitators or otherwise influenced by nomeansno but then, innovation only counts for so much.
The reissue of their tenth album, ‘Dance Of The Headless Bourgeoisie’ has, thankfully given me cause to re-evaluate the band, and while it is largely all about the high-octane punk, it also shows a band playing with myriad different forms

Eastern promise fades into the edges of ‘This Story Must be Told’, then there’s the pirate punk rock of ‘I’m an Asshole’, the rockabilly hipshakin’ groove of ‘Disappear’ and the exploratory noise and atmospherics of semi-spoken word opus ‘’The World Wasn’t Built in a Day’, all of which display a diversity and drive to expand on conventional blueprints.
Eclectic, inventive and anything but generic.
