If the quiet / loud dynamics, the soft chiming verses and big overdriven choruses and the chunky, chugging riffs are all fairly standard in the field of contemporary hard rock, then it’s to Fire at Dawn’s credit that they manage to make it sound fresh and inject their songs with enough energy and emotion to stand out from the myriad rock acts around that combine melody with a hard edge.
Victoria Walker’s vocals are a clear asset. Strong but without being coarse, shrill or penetrating, she balances power with melody and imbues her delivery with conviction and emotion.
‘Choose Me’ is the poppiest track on the EP, but there are still simmering undercurrents, and throughout the five tracks, they display a high level of musical articulacy, making for some nicely realised rock moments.
