Review: 'DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD'
'Live Champs'

-  Label: 'Loose Music'
-  Genre: 'Soul'

Our Rating:
"I'm havin' a brilliant time" Danny Wilson says at one point and by retaining such good natured stage banter, this live recording captures the singer's eagerness to share the good vibes with his audience at The Jazz Cafe, Camden.

Presumably, with his Mom and members of his family in the house he was especially keen to make a good impression.

This thirteen track career-spanning double album runs from These Days taken from the self titled debut in 2008 up to tracks from 2013's Stay True.

Other Days, Restless Feet and Colonel And The King all stretch beyond twelve minutes to give ample space for the five Champions in his fine band to show off.

The latter tune is a homage to Elvis and all the tracks could be said to be celebrations of the moment when old time Rock'n'Roll first embraced country soul.

Highlights of the set include the semi autobiographical (Never Stop Building) That Old Space Rocket , the exuberant Every Beat Of My Heart and You Don't Know (My Heart Is In The Right Place) in which Geoff Widdowson's fine sax playing comes to be fore.

This is one of those live albums which provides so much more than simply a run through of old favourites. It encapsulates the spirit of a band in their element to the point that the sound is more dynamic and spontaneous than on their fine studio albums.
