Following on very swiftly from an EP out outtakes that landed before the album has even had time to settle, Astronauts land the second single from their near-perfect debut long player ‘Hollow Ponds’. Granted, there isn’t a duff track on it, but ‘In My Direction’ encapsulates all of the things that make the album great, and drew many of us to Dan Carney’s previous work under the Dark Captain moniker.
Its genius lies in its simplicity: the repetition of the lyrics over a simple and repetitive guitar line hooks the listener, the beat is unconventional and Carney’s soft vocal style is oddly compelling, simultaneously laid back and tense. Mesmerisingly melodic, it’s quite simply a magnificent tune.
